Ovarian cancer

Author: Dr Carys Sonnenberg

Format: Further Reading

Ovarian cancer is common and often presents with non-specific symptoms, leading to a late diagnosis and poor prognosis. Did you know that any woman who has a first- or second- degree relative with ovarian cancer should be referred to consider genetics screening? In this article, Carys Sonnenberg discusses the importance of family history, as well as the common presenting symptoms and the interpretation of a raised Ca125, including the 2026 NICE update which age-stratifies the Ca125 value which should prompt an urgent pelvic scan. The reasons why we don’t offer population screening for ovarian cancer are also outlined, along with information about the implications of a relevant gene mutation on the risk of developing cancer of the ovary or breast.
